About the author
Hi there! I’m Steve Pannett, an author of gritty fantasy fiction and a creative specialising in brand design. I fell in love with reading as a child and—somewhat typically—with writing shortly after that. I try to read (and write) as broadly as I can but my true passion is—and always has been—fantasy fiction.
I have only one goal with my writing; to entertain. I want my readers to smile, grimace, cheer and bellow with every twist and turn along the way. I try to find characters who are flawed and complex, fighting with the ever-changing maelstrom of emotion and motivation that is the human condition.
In short, I have only ever set out to do one thing: to tell stories.
I live in Yorkshire with my wife, Fraz—whose constant support is the only reason I ever finish writing anything—and our twin boys, Ethan and Lachlan.

FAQs
What are your books about?
I write in the fantasy fiction genre. More specifically, the grittier/dark fantasy sub-genre (some would say grimdark, or “grimdark adjacent”).
My stories are character-led, but expect big set pieces, lots of action and more than few twists and turns along the way!
Where can I buy your books?
You can buy my books anywhere that books are sold! ePub and printed versions are available through the big sellers (Amazon, Apple Books, Kobo etc etc) as well as book retailers likes Barnes & Noble, Waterstones etc etc.
If you’re based in the UK or the US you can also buy printed copies directly from me – these sales are printed and distributed by IngramSpark.
What about indie bookstores?
I love independent bookstores! And they can absolutely stock my books through most ordering/distribution networks. If you want to buy through an indie bookstore but they don’t have my work on their shelves, you can always ask them if they’d order it for you!
I’m a book reviewer, will you send me your books for free?
The answer is maybe! I try to price my books modestly, but if you email hello@stevepannett.com then I’ll see what I can do.
Please understand that I might not approve every request for a free book, and more often than not these will be supplied as ebooks, as opposed to printed copies.
I run a bookshop, can I stock your books?
Yes of course! I should appear on most ordering systems, but if you can’t find me (or my books) on there then please get in touch via hello@stevepannett.com and I’ll do what I can to support you!
What is Broken Hilt Publishing?
I am a self-published author, and Broken Hilt Publishing is a trading name I use for books that sit within the fantasy genre. I started using this in 2024 to help categorise these books.
If I ever decide to write outside of the fantasy genre (I have no immediate plans to do so, but never say never!) then I will likely publish those books under a different trading name, to help readers distinguish between the two!
Do you attend events and signings?
Yes! I try to attend literature festivals, conferences and anything book-related as much as I can. Likewise I like to get to any fantasy conventions as I love the genre!
I run an event, blog, website and/or podcast, how can I get you involved?
I’d love to hear about any/all opportunities to get involved in the reading/writing community, please email hello@stevepannett.com and I’ll respond as soon as I can!
Are you on social media?
Yes, but only on the official channels listed on this website. If you see any others, that ain’t me!
How else can I stay in touch with your new releases?
You can follow my author page on Amazon, or you can sign-up to my newsletter.
Both of these will alert you of upcoming releases, ahead of the date of publication.
